The Aborted Chainsaw Massacre Strikes Back
They're brutal, they can play, and they like Israel, how can we not like them back? Death metal merchants Aborted's last album, The Archaic Abbatior, is a monster of a death metal album, with a new DVD coming up as well, and a show in Israel, we though it's a good time to grill band leader and vocalist, Sven.
Hey Sven, what's up with the band these days?
Well hello there sir! What’s up with the band right now? Well in between sweating our balls off due to the fucking heat, masturbating excessively and making fun of old people, we’re extremely busy right now with writing the new album which is set to be recorded in oktober, yet again with our dear friend mr Tue Madsen. We’re about halfway the writing process so there is still ALOT of work to be done [Laughs]
I understand you're about to release a new DVD, what's included in it?
Yup, well new DVD, it’s our first actually, just like poop coming out of the butthole for the first time, it feels very promising for us to do this project. Right now we’re editing the video stuff. The DVD should be out in oktober on Listenable records & will contain a live show of about an hour shot in Paris with 13 cameras, sound is also being mixed by Tue Madsen. Bonus material is interviews with all band members, the 2 videoclips we shot, some songs from other concerts (rome, canada, UK, antwerp) and stuff like that. Should be a pretty well documented release, check it out if you get the chance.
One of the main news about the band, is the new line up, first, what happened to the old one?
Well, we are a very hard working band, and it takes alot of dedication & sacrifice to keep on going, some people were just tired of doing all that & touring alot, they wanted to focus on their work career, make Money etc, others just had ego problems & were pretty much impossible to deal with anymore related to agression & all that. It got pretty ugly & out of hand after our longass US tour last year & the band nearly broke up then, we still felt there was alot to do with this band so we just took the necessary steps to salvage the ship as you can say. Line up changes suck, but sometimes when there is lepracy, the only thing left to do is to cut off an arm. The new line up has been doing great & is more potent than ever, we’re pretty confident about the way things are going & I guess you’ll all notice the smell when we’re over 😉
Where did you come up with the new one?
Well, I went to a salon to get my hair done after the US tour & all of a sudden this weirdass dude came to sit next to me, singing along to carcass tunes & talking about his love for old people and dead animals, obviously he seemed like someone who would fit the band. We held an airguitar tryout session to see if he looked good wit hit & oh boy! Pure talent! Or should I say flatulent? And so little Seb got in the band, saving us from harm. He brought along some girl (Olivia) which apparently knew what a bass looks like so we were like, fuck yeah a chick bassplayer, that’s like more album sales and stuff!!
We immediately checked out her cleavage And checked if she could pee in the bushes without messing up her clothes, and yes, SCORE! (well we didn’t check for pee stains though). Matty was actually a stunt double for Mel Gibson in the movie braveheart, when we just went to a bar for casual drunkage, we heard these weird noises coming from the back & there he was, stuffing ten bitches while yelling freedom. Anyone with such a technique of gangbanging could obviously not be refused for the common good of our sex appeal, so he was in & that’s how it REALLY went.
(on a more serious note: Steph couldn’t do the february tour because of his girl giving birth to his first born, so Seb contacted us to join us for the tour, after the line up troubles he also presented Olivia whom he was playing in a band with & both their musical talents pretty much nailed it right on, Matty already tried out for the band earlier & he was the next logical choice when the line up problems occured. Little fun trivia: both seb & Olivia have jewish blood, teehee!)
Do you view the band as your project because of the line up changes?
I have never seen the band as my project because i’m not that kind of person. The band is a band, and everyone has their say & opinion & contributions. Obviously though i’m in charge of alot of things besides the music as well & I founded the band. But it is not a project & I’m not the one to claim to be the sole leader or whatever you wish to call it, it is a group effort.
How much of an influence did the change have on your sound and musical style?
Not really, I mean everyone know that Aborted by now has found it’s style & sound, so we know what to stick to. The new record will be a typical aborted record, but with some new elements as well obviously, we don’t want to write the same record as before but we are also Staying in the style & sound we have created in the past. New line up or not this would have been the case either way. So far half of the new record has been written & I can tell you right now that it’s going to be more brutal than the previous, yet with a same level of variation & some new elements to it. Keep your eyes open for the release in february on Century Media.

Some info about your latest release, The Archaic Abattoir, first, what does the title mean?
It’s a concept story that continued after Goremageddon. The Archaic Abattoir is a description for the place, where the malpractician from Goremageddon continued his inhuman experiments & torture. Since he was no longer in a medical facility his tools & environment were very rudimentary & old , hence the word ARCHAIC, it’s also loosely based on the Texas Chainsaw massacre movies, which have always been somewhat an influence to us on the image point of view.
How do you think the album sounds in comparison with your former releases?
I’m still pretty happy about it, even though I personally would have liked it to be a notch higher on the extremety level. Every song has it’s own identity, which was a bit missing on Goremageddon, but it lacks a bit of the punch which Goremageddon had. I’m definately still happy about the record, but as with any record, afterwards there are things you know you could have done better, but time is always one problem. We had to write that record in 3 months ,which was pretty much very stressful haha! Guess we’re making a habit out of that now.
The band has grown and gained fame to a staggering level these last few years, to what do you attribute that success?
Lots of hard work, nothing else really. We’ve been busting our balls over the last 11 years, playing everywhere around europe, the US etc, which has definately been paying off. I mean we are in the first place a live band & to play in front of an audience is what does it for us, and the best way to promote your band. Signing to Century Media opened alot of doors for us, we’re extremely looking forward to play the Wacken fest this year & obviously the Israel show since both in the past have been amazing. Everything, especially in the last 2 years has cost us tremendously in ways of sacrificing for the band, but the end result so far has definately been worth it!
How did you start out your connection with Leng Tche?
Well I founded LT back in 2001 I believe & right now i’m also the only original member left haha. When the band started to take things more serious & actually play more shows & write descent songs, several members quit because they had their lives to take as a priority & they didn’t really want to play live. Shortly after the MMP release we had found a solid line up & witht he addition of Boris on vocals (who appears for the first time on the process record) we now have a solid line up which is not about to change. We’re recording a new fullength this summer & I’m pretty sure it’ll surprise alot of people [Laughs]. Keep yoru eyes open, Marasmus should be released by Relapse around april 2007!.
How possible is it operating with both bands simultaneously?
It’s not easy & it takes alot of good planning. Most of both bands shows are always booked 4 months or more before hand, so we can manage to make everything work. Sometimes we have to change some plans to make everything fit, but until now it’s all been working out & both bands are friends so there is an understanding obviously. LT has been doing more & more these last months/year and we are anxious to do more as well, we just have to make it fit around the busy aborted schedule, which leaves me with not so much private time [Laughs].
Then again I rather be busy than bored.
How did your initial connection with Israel begin?
We heard about the good food, hot women & smelly men, so we were instantly sold! Oron contacted us back then along with Tomer to book this show, we’ve never been or played in Israel & we definately wanted to have the experience so we just booked the flights & that was it. We really loved the show, the people & the country so we came back later & also once with Leng Tch’e under quite bizarre circumstances [Laughs], we have alot of friends out there & we’re looking forward to get utterly thrashed with them again this summer!
Can you give us some recollections from your former visits here?
There’s way too many to mention, alot of them involving vomitus & deranged post alcoholic endeavours with our good friends in lehavoth, whorecore & betzefer, ending up late night in the dixie having breakfast while nearly passing out, good times, good times! [Laughs] And there shall be more of those in august!
Why did you choose to do shows alongside Emeth?
That was the choice of Whorecore to bring them over, we didn’t really choose any of the performing bands, Matty also plays in Emeth & they are good friends, so obviously we’re happy that they are sharing the stage with us again that day, it’s not only a show, but all bands are good buddies so it’s going to be one hell of a hot party as well [Laughs]!
How did you come in contact with the guys from Israel's Whorecore?
For years now, Doli has been in Lehavoth for years & we got friends with them since the first show in israel then those farts spent 3 months in belgium & we really got to know each other. Since he was obviously also in Whorecore we also got to know them, every individual is a very cool person & they’re pretty funny (albeit smelly) guys. Recently Whorecore also came over here for some shows & a tour with Macabre & we hung out again obviously, as said they can always count on us & I think the other way around as well.
What can we expect in your show in Israel?
Expect it to be hot, smelly & quite energetic! Come see for yourself what we have up our sleeve!
